| After successive reforms since 1672, the antique possession has been converted into The Gran Hotel Son Net, finalizing the restoration in June 1998. The proprietor has taken care to conserve the architecture with its stone walls, Arabic tiles, the rustic beams, the interior patio and, of course, the centenary oil press, « Sa Tafona ». The comfort and elegance has not been forgotten in the interior decoration and in the beauty and purity of its exterior gardens, that make Son Net unforgettable. Son Net is an old Mallorquin possession, and its history refers back to before the Roman invasion, where large stones were used for the construction, as in the case of Brittany. After the vandals and the Byzantines occupied the island, the Muslims conquered it in the year 911. During this period, Son Net and all of the island lived in splendor. The Arabs constructed an irrigation system and converted Mallorca into an agricultural paradise. The stone walls, which can be seen all over the island, are the best testimonies of their work. In 1229, when the Christians reconquered Mallorca, the area was traded to the Bishop of Barcelona, one of the most influential people of this time. At that moment, the proprietor of Son Net was one of the biggest in Mallorca and was named Pariatge. Son Net was divided into different parts, El Palmer, La Granada, La Conque, Calprida and Ortulutx and was given to the most important noblemen as compensation and to protect Christian interests on the island. One of these noblemen was from the Net family and in 1453, it was named Son Net for the first time. In 1672, after some years of instability, the house became its present day size. In 1863, when the Net family extinguished, the estate was divided into 27 small properties, of which Son Net is one of the largest enjoying its extraordinary location with its marvelous views and tranquility. |
